EcoKids – What Our Future Holds

When EcoKids Children’s Consignment Store opened in 2012, it was intended to raise money to support The Learning Lamp’s free after school programs for children in Johnstown’s poorest neighborhoods. Here we are, more than four years, piles of clothes and stacks of toys later. We’ve enjoyed building relationships with the many shoppers and consignors who frequented our store. Unfortunately, we’ve come to the conclusion that the store would never fulfill the vision we had for it. While it does a great job of providing affordable, quality children’s items for local shoppers, we’ve never been able to generate support for our free after school programs. We’ve made the difficult decision to close EcoKids. The last day will be January 31, 2017. The retail environment and the economy of our region have changed dramatically since EcoKids opened. As an organization, we must focus on our core mission of engaging all children in the support they need to succeed. We will concentrate our efforts on other ways to raise funds to operate programs that make a difference for area children. We are grateful for your support of EcoKids, as well as the hard work of our dedicated staff. We’re sure that you have a lot of questions. We’ll try to address them here: We will not be accepting consignments between now and the closing of the store. If you have already dropped off spring/summer items for consignment, a store associate will be in contact with you after January 31, 2017 to pick up your items. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience. If you have an appointment, we apologize that we cannot honor it. We will... read more

Santa Headed to EcoKids for Free Photos With Purchase

Santa is coming to town and is ready for his close-up! On Friday, November 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. families will get a chance to meet the jolly old elf and get a free photo when they make a purchase of any size at EcoKids Consignment Store at 2025 Bedford Street in Johnstown. To keep the little ones entertained while waiting for their chance to tell Santa what’s on their Christmas lists, there will be crafts and coloring pages. In addition, shoppers will receive 10 percent off their total purchase, including newly-inventoried holiday dresses and suits. Also, select items from lines like Melissa & Doug will be marked 10 to 40 percent off and Kidorable® items will be marked 30 percent off. Photos are courtesy of Photography by Holly Lees. EcoKids works to give families inexpensive gift options for children, including gently used and brand new toys, clothing and equipment. The store also offers scarves, jewelry, candles and local crafters’ items as gift options for adults. And as families shop at EcoKids, they’ll know that they are supporting a good cause. Proceeds go toward funding The Learning Lamp’s free After School Outreach Program in Johnstown’s Moxham, Oakhurst, Prospect and Coopersdale neighborhoods. Outreach participants receive help with homework, structured activities and a healthy evening meal. Think you can make it? Please join EcoKids’ Facebook event for “Photos with Santa” and let us know.  For more information, call 814-266-0111 or visit... read more
